Slight decrease in import season at Veiling Rhein-Maas

"The main season for the import business is drawing to a close, while the local production of cut flowers is increasing”, explains Jac Vallen and Guy Kosman, Area Manager Import at Veiling Rhein-Maas.

The provisional results for the import season compared to 2016 show a slight decrease with regard to sales and quantities. Due to poor weather conditions in Ethiopia and Kenya, the delivered quantity, especially for roses, ended up being less than in the previous year. At the same time, the market situation in April contributed to a smaller quantity of roses. In contrast, the quantity of delivered roses again significantly increased during the Mother’s Day week and also in the entire month of May.

Fairtrade roses

Due to the positive feedback in the 2016 customer survey and the success of the pilot project carried out, Veiling Rhein-Maas has also decided to permanently establish and expand the sale of Fairtrade roses at the clock.

Ranunculus, bouquet fillers and decorative green
The 2017 ranunculus season was very satisfying for our partners in terms of quantity and sales. The introduction of Premium Quality for ranunculus and the supply of high-quality products had a positive influence. The development of the delivery quantities of bouquet fillers has been positive up to now. Only Gypsophila was produced in significantly lower quantity than in last year, which is due to the poor weather conditions in Ethiopia at the start of the year. The delivery quantities for imported decorative green were extremely positive taking the entire season into account. With eucalyptus, a quantity decrease was observed in spite of considerably better average prices compared to last year. Also noticeable was the large decrease of delivered pistachio quantities.
