Sneak peek photo report IFTEX 2017:

Kenya: Drought, elections cast doubt over expansion plans

Shall we expand now or wait? For some Kenyan growers that are considering to increase their greenhouse acreage it is an important question. The elections and the amount of water available are one of the reasons for their doubt.

In august, a new president will be elected and some growers seem to rather wait till the elections are over. Even though, the situation is stable at the moment, some still have the unrest that arose after the elections of 10 years ago in their minds. "We now only have to bridge a couple of months and you will never know what will happen afterwards, so we rather play it safe", says a grower.

Another point that might prevent the growers from expanding is the amount of water reserve they have. This year, the raining season was delayed and was shorter than usual, which resulted in a water scarcity at several locations. So, if they decide to expand they need to have enough water. Therefore, these growers in the areas that was hit by the drought are currently calculating the possibilities.
