NL: New packaging potting soil: over 40% biobased material

Oerlemans Plastics has been busy with the development of biobased packaging and films since 1992. When there was no social pressure yet to develop renewable biobased packaging and foils, Oerlemans Plastics had already started and has gained a lot of knowledge and experience over the past 25 years. The biobased raw materials used for the potting soil packaging are known as ‘I'm green’, which means vegetable based raw materials made from sugar cane. This raw material is renewable. After use, the package must be offered at the traditional plastic collection so that it can be fully recycled. With the packaging of a (nature) product it is logical that the packaging is also durable. The major advantage of these biobased raw materials is that they are renewable and they keep getting closer to the quality of traditional fossil raw materials.

After a thorough preparation process, a new packaging has been developed by Oerlemans Plastics for potting soil producers. Instead of petroleum-based film, this packaging is based on as much as 40% of vegetable raw materials (sugar cane). This packaging has a lower environmental impact, is 100% recyclable and is also suitable for keeping compost-like products over a longer period without composting itself or breaking down. It is expected that in the coming years the percentage share of biobased raw materials will be increased. Oerlemans Plastics is already very active with the further development.

The ultimate challenge is and remains to convince the consumer of this more sustainable alternative. Such a concept requires a lot of all involved parties. The limited availability of good renewable raw materials still results in a higher price for the consumer. Financial incentives from our government would greatly help this sector to structurally use more biobased raw materials. To convince consumers of the distinctive character and the sustainable choice, good communication on the shop floor is essential.
