Xylella fastidiosa arrives in the Iberian Peninsula

Xylella fastidiosa, until now present in the Balearic Islands, has made the leap to the Iberian Peninsula.

The corresponding regional authorities have detected it in an almond farm located in Guadalest (Alicante).

Just knowing the news, the measures foreseen in the contingency plan designed for this purpose were launched.

The first outbreaks of this bacterium, which affects olive trees, vineyards, nuts, stone fruit and citrus fruit, besides a good number of ornamental plants, were detected in Spain at the end of 2016 and appeared in Mallorca. Before that, in 2013 and 2015, the bacterium emerged in Southern Italy.
