NL: Lisianthus Open Day at Sakata Ornamentals

Last week, on 19 and 20 September, breeder Sakata Ornamentals organized the annual Lisianthus Open Day in the greenhouse of grower Hans vd Lugt in 's-Gravenzande, The Netherlands. A selective Lisianthus party was invited, who literally and figuratively were able to warm up for the latest Lisianthus developments.

Lisianthus growers, young plant growers and buyers were invited to view the flower trials under the guidance of Sakata's specialists. With a lot of interest and a critical eye, the latest developments in the Lisianthus assortment of Sakata was viewed. The new Lisianthus varieties were, in a comprehensive test, compared to Sakata's current commercial species and competitive varieties. No less than 92 varieties, of which 27 are experimental, have been scrutinized by the experts. In particular, there was a lot of interest in the latest introductions of the double-flowered Rosita series and a lot of praise on the developments in the special Alissa varieties, but also the newest single-flowered Piccolo variety scored high on the list.

Lisianthus, also known as Eustoma Grandiflorum, originates from North America. There it was discovered in river beds of the desert and in prairie areas. However, in the 1930s, it was further refined in Japan; hence the nickname 'Japanese Rose'. The Lisianthus is known for its powerful symbolism. Appreciation, gratitude and charm are therefore key words of the Lisianthus, besides it can be used in many ways and it has an excellent vase life. Thanks to many years of breeding and selection, there is now a Lisianthus assortment that is well-suited to grow under modern Dutch conditions. Sakata Ornamentals is proud of their Lisianthus assortment and strives for quality, diversity and innovation.
