NL: Cyclamen shine at Varitrials

At the trials of the Dutch cyclamen breeder Varinova approximately 300 cyclamen varieties form a spectacular array of different colors. The varieties are being compared and put on display at their greenhouse in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands. Their so-called Varitrials started on October 23 and will be open to visit till November 10.

Expanding and improving series
This year, the emphasis of Varinova's trials is on expanding and improving their existing series. "As a breeder, you are always on the lookout for new varieties, but offering a good and uniform series is just as important. “So, this year, no new series, but improving the series with new colors and better varieties", says Carolien Klein of Varinova. Their Facila series, for example, has been improved by adding more varieties for winter production next to their summer production line. "Facila Winter grows slightly larger and grows well under low light conditions."

High expectations for Merita
Merita is one of Varinova's newest series. It is an intermediate F1 cyclamen with many flowers, compact shape, firm flower stems and a marbled leaf type. For the production a pot size of 10 to 12 cm is the most optimal. The Merita series currently consists of two varieties; Shine Red and Shine Deep Rose. The series was introduced last year and Klein has high expectations for this series. "It is applicable for many markets and I think it will do particularly well on the US market. In this market, they are fond of large flowers and the Merita has large flowers."

Trialing
And trials aren't being called trials for nothing. This Merita series, for example is currently only available in Shine varieties, but in the next few years, they will add new colours and these potential new colors are currently being trialed.

New potential colour for the Varinova's Merita series. In this colour red, for example, they trial three different varieties to see which variety performs the best.

Next to colour, Varinova is also trialing different pot sizes. For every variety, Varinova advises to grow them in a certain pot size, but during the trials, they also experiment with different pot sizes. "We are curious how the plants will grow and then show the companies the different possibilities." For example, for their largest series, named Magnia, they advise to cultivate this plant in a 14-20 cm pot size, but at the trials these are shown in 3 different pot sizes (13, 17 and 23 cm).

Bestseller
For several years now, the Varinova's bestseller is the Goblet Shine Wine Red for outdoor use. One of the new varieties is the Goblet Shine Pink for outdoor use and Goblet distinguishes itself by its shape. "When you take a look at the plant from above, it looks like a goblet", says Carolien. The Goblet is available in 3 bright colours.
