expected flights: 496,600

Schiphol presents 'Usage estimate 2018'

Schiphol is getting busier and busier. This is good, for the economy, and bad, for people and polar bears. It is with this view that policy makers, directors and the Netherlands as a whole look at the future of the airport. In this respect it isn't a surprise that the document 'Usage estimate 2018', presented and handed to the Chamber by the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management last week, can count on some interest.

In the Schiphol Usage Estimate 2018 it is indicated what the expected usage of Schiphol Airport will be in 2018. This year runs from 1 November 2017 to 31 October 2018. The usage estimate will also indicate what this usage means for the sound load for the environment, external safety and emissions.

500,000 plane movements
In the year of usage 2018 a total of 496,600 plane movements are expected. This is comparable to the number of flights that are expected to have occurred in 2017. This means that Schiphol will not allow a further growth of the number of flights next year, which means it is complying with one of the agreements made in the framework of the new norm and control system, namely that the number of plane movements can be no more than 500,000 per year until 2020.

In reality the number of flights will slyly go over 500,000, as the 'non-trade traffic, mostly small business traffic', is a 'separate traffic segment' and so does not have to be counted. This is expected to concern around 15,000 aircraft movements (of which a part are helicopter flights) in 2018.

The document 'Schiphol Usage Estimate 2018) can be found here.
