Kenya: KFC & Partners celebrate HerProject Success

The Kenya Flower Council in partnership with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) and National Organization of Peer Educators (NOPE) organized the alumni workshop held on HerProject. During the event, the KFC CEO Mrs. Jane Ngige said there is great involvement in HERprojects and people are keen on projects that add value to the flower industry.

The HERproject has been implemented in 14 countries reaching over 700,000 workers working with 20 NGO partners in 620 factories and farms. The project is composed of three elements including HERfinance, HERhealth and HERrespect. HERfinance will be implemented mid next year and the topics and various topics will be tackled including borrowing responsibly, discussing finances with family members, exposure to finances and awareness raising of formal versus informal financial services. The project addresses key issues, the cost of doing things and productivity increase.

Myriad numbers of benefits has been witnessed with the project which includes
  • Decrease in absenteeism and low turnover of farm workers
  • Improved compliance within the industry
  • Overall increase in workplace productivity
  • Improved business relationship with workers
  • Greater transparency and recognition
  • Improved health of workers
  • Improved closeness of workers with management
  • Ensures returns on business investment
  • Product benefit from more resilient supply chain
  • Improved social environment
  • Creating better working environment
HERproject contributes significantly in the production of flowers indirectly as workers are happy and healthier. Sustainability of the project will ensure that the project continues running even after the close out of the project. NOPE in collaboration with the BSR have developed a sustainability tool. In order to ensure effective sustainability, it is important to observe the following strategies
  • Work with government ministries
  • Ensure that all structures are put in place
  • Provide adequate resources both financial and human
  • Provide technical assistance and support
