Harley Eskelund of Rosa ApS looks back on 2017:

"Denmark: "An excellent year for pot roses"

Large flowers and high quality seems to characterize the 2017 sales of pot roses. According to Harley Eskelund, director and owner of Rosa ApS greenhouse company in Denmark, 2017 has been a good year with rising demand, particularly for the high pot roses with large flowers. When looking back at the year, Eskelund is satisfied.

Infinity roses. "They ensure good economy in growing pot roses also in November and December"

Good start
Harley Eskelund mainly sells potted roses to Germany, Finland, Sweden and England, but also sells a lot in Denmark, where the company is based. According to him, the year started off well with Valentine's Day on February 14 and Women's Day on March 8. The Forever Roses 'covert' seemed to do very well. "As always, they were a hit. We get good prices and all was sold in advance. We managed to make more than 400,000 red and pink roses in small 6 cm pots of the variety Bari Roses Forever and Pink Bari Roses Forever", he says

In general, these small flowered potted roses are in less demand, so Eskelund grows mainly roses in bigger pot sizes. However, only for these two days, the demand for smaller pot sizes increases sharply. And as these Bari Roses Forever are stable, easy to grow and give many cuttings it was possible to switch from bigger varieties to the tiny ones just for these two weeks.

Good demand Infinity all seasons
"It was an excellent start of the year 2017 as continued with good orders for both spring time and summer time. Especially the Infinity roses was very popular in all seasons as we see that the big chains prefer high quality pot roses with big flowers, and are willing to pay higher prices."

A lot of celebrations end of the year
The last two months of year, there was a lot to celebrate, starting with the Finnish National Day, followed by Christmas and New Year's Sales. However, historically speaking, the sales of pot roses are not profiting from these celebrations in these last months of the year. But Eskelund tapped into the celebrations a couple of years ago and with the introduction of the Infinity roses, they have seen the demand and sales increasing. "The Finnish National Day, for example, was quite special this year, as they celebrated the 100th year of their freedom and Rosa ApS tapped into the celebration by packing their Infinity roses in a special blue (the Finnish color) cover. Then continuing with Christmas, a period where the traditional Christmas flowers and plants like Poinsettias are still the number one products. However, the potted rose is increasing in popularity. "For Christmas we sold Infinity roses in black cover and several of them with mica in gold or silver color. Especially the white Infinity was the bestseller in November and December.

Good lookout for 2018
Also the beginning of 2018 looks promising for Rosa ApS. "We have the order book filled up for the first months and also for Christmas and New Year costumers already asking to book in advance. So 2018 will again be a great year for the pot roses, says Eskelund.

Rosa and Harley Eskelund has over 30 years experience in growing pot roses, experience that are also given to their licensed growers, for up start with pot roses worldwide. Picture dates from 1988 in their first greenhouse.
