Pascal Rossen, Desch Plantpak:

New clever shaped orchid tray improves drainage

Listening to the grower's experiences. It is crucial for many suppliers and for pot, container and tray manufacturers like Desch Plantpak, it is too. On request of an orchid young plant grower, they developed a new orchid tray with a draining top and bottom. After conducting several trials, one type is in production and the reactions so far are positive. At the IPM Essen, Desch Plantpak presented these trays, along with many other products, at their booth.

Draining top and bottom
According to Desch's Business Development Manager Pascal Rossen, the combination of the draining top and bottom of the tray is what makes it so unique. "Usually, water remains in the area between the plants on top of the tray. In turn, it affects the micro climate between the plants and when there is too much water on the area between the plants, an undefined flow of water will reach the plant. So, in order to prevent this, we changed the shape of this flat area into that of a pyramid. In this way, the water evenly flows directly to the plant and due to the holes in the bottom of the pot, the surplus water can leave the tray." The orchid trays that are currently in production have 2 x 4 mm holes in the bottom.

Trials
This tray was designed after listening, discussing the several possibilities and conducting trials with a Dutch orchid young plant grower who requested for a solution to the water that remained on top of the tray. The grower is pleased with the tray and is currently growing its young plants in these trays. However, more types will be added and these will be trialed too. "It is very important to listen to the grower's experiences and requests. We now have this tray with a 2 x 4 mm hole in the bottom in production, but we will continue trialing different types till we have a series of types that fulfill the demand of the different orchid growers."

Recycled plastic
The trays are available with a transparent and green-transparent color. Both are manufactured of recycled plastic, but the green tray is a bit more environmentally friendly as more recycled material can be used.
