NL: Gas replaced with wood chips for Kwekerij Baas

Kwekerij Baas has a two month old new organic installation to supplement the existing wood burner which has been there for 7 years. This puts the company a step ahead of the demand from minister Wiebes of Economic Affairs and Climate. Wiebes wants companies to stop using natural gas in 2022 as the gas pipe in Groningen is slowly being closed.

Kwekerij Baas heats the greenhouse by burning wood waste. Leftover wood from the environment, such as cuttings, is turned into heat and electricity in a special installation: "We use around 18,000 tonnes per year divided over both installations," says sales manager Edwin Westerhuis. Omroep Flevoland had a look at the nursery in Ens.

Green energy
"Our existing wood burner only heated the greenhouse. The new installation also has an evaporation turbine that ensures we can supply electricity back to the net." On the profitability, Edwin says: "Of course it's an investment, but in the end the price level is more stable than heating using natural gas. The government is stimulating the installation, partially as it is about new techniques for the Netherlands."

And the rest?
"What's left after burning, is ash of course. At the moment this is being processed into the concrete and tarmac, as it still isn't seen as pure waste. We are now working on sampling the ash to find out how pure it is. Then we can see whether we can make a compost product out of it."
