Special box extends shelf-life of flowers

At the recent Fruit Logistica trade show held in Berlin, Janny MT, a French company, was showcasing, among other products, their Janny MT Module. This is a controlled atmosphere bin. Adrien Buisson, Sales Manager for Northern Europe at Janny MT, saw a significant opportunity for this equipment in the region. “Especially on the flower market for storing peonies”, he says.

“The European peony market starts in Israel in February. It then moves to Italy, France and, lastly, the Netherlands”, explains Adrien. “Since the Netherlands, which produces a lot of these flowers, is last on the market, they have a great opportunity to extend the season by using our equipment.”

The peony season is only six weeks long. “By using our controlled atmosphere bins, growers in the Netherlands can extend their season to August/September, when there is a big gap in the market”, Adrien continues. “Janny MT modules can fill that gap by preserving these flowers for a longer period compared to cold storage.”

“Our big project at the moment is to work with peony growers in Northern Europe to store these flowers during the production peak, which is at the beginning of June. They will then be able to supply peonies when you cannot find them anywhere in the world. So, there are big opportunities at stake”, says Adrien.

Janny MT has also started a collaboration in the US to develop a controlled atmosphere bin that can be used for transportation. Not only for flowers but also fruit, vegetables and mushrooms. “These can be transported through the cold chain to other countries by using our equipment”, says Adrien. “These bins are also nestable, which saves space journey back to their home base.”
