UK: Wyevale Nurseries unveils new plants to consumers

Wyevale Nurseries officially unveiled three new plants to consumers at the Garden Press Event in London on February 28, 2018.

Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford launched Daphne odora x bholua ‘Perfume Princess’, Dianella tasmanica Wyeena and Phormium ‘Blondie’, which won a Silver Award in the Shrubs and Climbers Category at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) National Plant Show last year.

Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We were delighted to officially unveil three of our new plants to journalists who attended the show. There seemed to be great interest in the plants and we were on hand to chat to people about them in depth and explain their key features. We also spoke to attendees about our plans for the coming year as well as hot topics like Biosecurity.

“Daphne odora x bholua ‘Perfume Princess’ is available now and we think it may possibly be the most scented shrub in the world. The combination of flower size, quantity and perfume make it a strong candidate for this title. It has very large flowers – double the size of any odora Daphne available. It is extremely floriferous – tip bearing flowers are followed by flowers that open all the way down the stem.

“It also has a very long flowering period, offering months of flowers and is extremely tough and durable, able to withstand high temperature extremes. To add to all this, it doesn’t get the sick yellowing of leaves that is so common in Daphne. It is an excellent grower and responds very well to pruning.”

Phormium ‘Blondie’ is available from spring 2018 and has a distinct and unique new twist on Phormium. It grows to just 60cm tall and produces long arching leaves, which cascade over the pot, more akin to a spider plant in habit.

Adam added: “The stunning cream and white variegation works well as an illuminating centrepiece. It was discovered in New Zealand as a sport of Phormium ‘Cream Delight’ and is hardy to -12oc.

“Dianella tasmanica Wyeena is available from July 2018. It is a fantastic architectural plant to bring drama to the garden. The stunning broad foliage is a striking combination of olive green with white margins and grows as a strong clumping upright, arching form.

“It is ideal for planting in swathes or as background plants to smaller grasses or shrubs. Perfect for patio pots or in the garden and has great cold and frost tolerance. It is also very low maintenance, with low water and care requirements.”
