US (CT): Straight A on sustainability for Casertano

N. Casertano Greenhouses & Farms in Cheshire, CT is a 3rd generation family owned and operated perennial grower. Operations started in 1929 and currently Casertano’s has approximately 20 acres indoor and 75 acres outdoor production.

Owner John Casertano has always been very concerned about the environment. This awareness led to the start of the cooperation with MPS (More Profitable Sustainability) on obtaining the MPS ABC certification in 2017. Now, little over a year later, Casertano’s has shown that its awareness of environmental aspects has paid off with excellence in sustainability. After the independent initial audit, performed by MPS-ECAS, during which all aspects of the certification were verified the MPS-A qualification has been awarded.

Examples of sustainability principles which have been implemented are:

Integrated Pest Management; scouting, use of beneficial insects and softer crop protection agents
Capturing rainwater
Implementing recycling principles; separation of card board / plastic and organic waste. Awareness of water & energy use in the office and on the nursery

The team at Casertano’s is very pleased with the service of MPS and ease of implementing the MPS ABC certification. With obtaining MPS-A their mission has not stopped; continuously they are looking at new improvements and they want to further improve their score for MPS ABC in the coming years.
