Ethiopian government looking to create more jobs
The World Bank is funding the “Economic Opportunities Program” (EOP). The EOP encompasses a mix of policy actions, investment activities, and technical assistance. The focus on industrialization is intended to create jobs directly and create the conditions for greater labor market access. In line with the government’s vision of creating a system of self-reliance for refugees, a set of reforms and interventions has been proposed that will allow refugees to benefit from job opportunities without putting undue strain on host communities. Furthermore, the EOP focuses on sustainability of industrial and refugee-related development, addressing labor, environmental, and social dimensions.
As part of World Bank’s support of the EOP, an Environmental and Social System Assessment (ESSA) of the institutions involved thereby has been conducted by the World Bank. The assessment has outlined the following points namely; program risks, institutions’ readiness to address social and environmental issues, and support measures to increase their capacity.
