US: Harris Seeds expands organic vegetable & flower seed line

Harris Seeds carries over 90 new varieties of certified organic vegetable seed and cut flower seed varieties in addition to their existing product offering. Other new offerings include cover crops, organic seed garlic, and OMRI/organic approved supplies.

Growers can find these organic products in the 2017-2018 Harris Seeds Organic Catalog. This is Harris Seeds’ second year of creating an exclusive organic seed catalog through their expanding Harris Seeds Organic brand.

Harris Seeds Organic is focusing on serving diverse organic growers, who provide organic produce to fresh market stands, farmers markets, and CSA’s succeed in their local areas. They see these growers as being climate change combaters and helping drive agriculture to a new sustainable era.

AAS winning Red Racer Tomato is a compact determinate tomato yielding tons of marketable fruit that have outstanding flavor, and even better disease resistance. Another AAS winner, Harvest Moon watermelon is the first organic produced seedless watermelon to win the coveted award. Bringing back a Joseph Harris bred original, King of the North pepper has been tried and true for almost a century. At a 2007 NOVIC trial, it was rated as the second best red bell pepper for producing marketable fruit throughout the season. A new twist on corn, Double Red, which was a breeding project by Alan Kapuler, works double time as a sweet corn when picked at the right time, and ground into red corn flour after maturity has passed.

With a focus on diversity and helping re-establish nearly lost heirlooms, they have introduced quite a few varieties that are part of the Ark of Taste, Slow Food program. Thelma Sanders is a type of acorn squash that has been described as “fine meated, better than sweet potatoes.” Aunt Molly’s ground cherries are abundant producers that have been grown since the early 19th century. Considered one of the best frying peppers today, Jimmy Nardellos Sweet Italian pepper has had a presence on dinner plates since the seed was first saved.

Harris Seeds is growing a movement that is making the cut flower market domestic and organic. Beautiful and unique organic cut flower varieties like Celosia Supercrest Mix or Chief Red Flame are now available. The plumes will add texture and vivid color to any bouquet. Poppies like Drama Queen or Sallie’s Double Pink will be a showstopper at fresh market stands. Customer favorite sunflowers like Velvet Queen, Titan, or Teddy Bear are great to sell as individual cuts.
