Freek Langstraat, Sjaak van Schie

"Hy-pe is rapidly gaining popularity"

Sjaak van Schie is a large Dutch hydrangea grower. Literally, because he has more than 35 hectares of production in the Netherlands, and in addition to that the grower also has another 25 hectares in Portugal. The grower specializes in the production of hydrangeas, and they know how to distinguish themselves in different areas. Such is the case with the showpiece, the Hy-pe Avantgarde.

Hy-pe, a young hydrangea brand but rapidly gaining in popularity, was introduced by Sjaak van Schie. Salesman at the company Freek Langstraat explains: "Through the unique color and shapes, the plants we sell under the Hy-pe brand stand out from the normal hydrangea. Because we put a lot of time and energy into breeding and cultivating the different varieties, we deliberately do not deliver very large quantities. It should not immediately become a mass product, we try to keep Hy-pe exclusive."

The Hy-pe - the 'Hy' is for hydrangea, the 'pe' would be Portuguese for 'at the foot of' and is a reference to the production location in Portugal - is available in both garden and indoor variants. The first varieties that fall under the brand are already available since February, and some varieties will continue until the end of September. Besides Sjaak van Schie, two other growers are now affiliated, who are allowed to sell their hydrangeas under the brand: JoGrow, and Danish grower Gartneriet Møllerhøj.

"The plants truly must be distinctive," says Freek. "We do this because we produce in a market-oriented way instead of starting with 100 Danish growers simultaneously." Eighty percent of the plants that are produced by the grower fall under the standard assortment, but, says Freek, the focus for the coming year will definitely be on the further development of Hy-pe.
