"Faster growth of plants treated with biocontrol"

In collaboration with a Belgian grower, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries conducted a trial with Biobest looking at the impact of different methods of application for Asperello T34 Biocontrol against root rot disease in Ribes sanguineum ‘King Edward VII’.

Drenching or soil incorporation?
It is well known that Ribes is sensitive to Phytophthora root rot. The trial compared two methods of application for Asperello T34 Biocontrol: potting mix incorporation versus drenching. The trial compared Asperello T34 Biocontrol with a chemical control, a biological product of reference and an untreated control. The Ribes was repotted on May 18th, and the assessment took place on July 26th. Four categories were considered for the assessment: excellent, average, weak and very weak plants.

Faster growth
Compared with the other treatments (see graph), mixing Asperello T34 Biocontrol with the substrate (soil incorporation) produced the fastest and best quality growth. The drench did not have the same effect; this was observed both for Asperello T34 Biocontrol and for the biological product of reference. The reduced growth in the control treatment was thought to be caused by the presence of soilborne pathogens in combination with high temperatures. The Asperello T34 Biocontrol incorporated proved to be the most effective treatment in such circumstances and resulted in the only treatment with absence of weak plants.
