US (ME): Nursery commodity crop insurance deadline nears

The sales closing deadline for nursery crop insurance is May 1, 2018.

To be eligible, a nursery must receive at least 40% of its gross income from the wholesale marketing of nursery plants, and meet other eligibility requirements outlined in the Risk Management Agency policy fact sheet at http://www.rma.usda.gov/pubs/rme/nursery.pdf

Nursery crop insurance protects the grower from loss due to adverse weather conditions, failure of irrigation supply caused by weather related events, and wildlife damage. Growers can protect their plant inventory value (PIV) at the catastrophic level (27.5% of PIV and costing the producer $300) or at higher levels of coverage ranging from 50-75% of their PIV.

For more information, visit the UMaine Risk Management and Crop Insurance website at: https://extension.umaine.edu/agriculture/crop-insurance/ or contact Crop Insurance Education Program Manager Erin Roche (erin.roche@maine.edu or 207.949.2490).
