Turkish breeders looking to trademark locally grown plants

The Erzincan Garden Products Research and Development Institute is carrying out a project to bring down the dependency on other countries by developing local varieties.

The project has been ongoing for 12 years and so far 3 varieties out of 32 collected from 19 cities are trademarked. “Vuslat”, one of the trademarked varieties, will be introduced to the local market in August, 2018.

The manager of the Erzincan Garden Products Research and Development Institute, Birol Karadogan, said: “These are very important steps in reducing our dependency on other countries in floriculture. We hope that in the future, we will be able to offer more local and trademarked varieties to the market. We are also in close contact with the pharmaceutical industry. We are currently conducting some preliminary research to utilize these flowers in this industry.”

Agricultural engineer Meral Aslay, responsible for the project: “We have already trademarked 3 crown imperials, there are another 3 coming down from the pipeline and they will hopefully be ready for the trademark process soon. Additionally, we are researching cholinesterase enzymes and their activities to make use of these varieties in the pharmaceutical industry.”
