Ukraine: Flowers still popular despite high prices

The Ukrainian flower market is no different than most other flower markets around the world: there's a strong Dutch presence, and despite the war in the east of the country, floral sales aren't slowing down. At the Flower Expo Ukraine, local and international traders and breeders show off their products. And again, the Dutch are omnipresent, with 60 exhibitors to represent the country.

Ukraine, a couple of hundred miles to the east, there's a war raging, but in Kiev, it's business as usual. Exhibitors say the market is mostly stable, some even see a slight upward trend, and they don't see this changing any time soon. The local currency is down to a third of its value compared to the euro in only a few years, but that doesn't seem to impact the market. Flowers are expensive, but customers are still lining up. Home-grown production is limited (and not always 'legal'), and florists in particular are still clearly interested in buying.

The show, modest in size but with high attendance, is again organized by Nova Exhibitions in conjunction with Ukrainian company CoD Exhibitions. Today is the last day of the show, later we will publish a more extensive report, along with our customary photo report.

Askania Flora is Ukraine's largest rose grower. The company reportedly has 22 ha of professional production, and used the trade show to highlight their assortment.

In the evening, a social gathering took place at the Dutch embassy, which has become a bit of a tradition. Pictured are agricultural attaché Carolien Spaans, the ambassador himself, and Kuno Jacobs (with microphone) representing the trade show organization.
