Colombian minister of agriculture meets with Dutch industry reps

The Colombian Minister of Agriculture, Juan Guillermo Zuluaga, met with a number of Dutch companies on April 25. He was in the Netherlands for a two-day visit as part of an international trade mission on sustainable agricultural development.

Dutch company Waterdrinker organized the meeting at the invitation of the IDH, the Sustainable Trade Initiative, an organization that brings together international governments, companies and financiers to jointly achieve sustainable economic growth in tropical rainforest countries.

Round table
The IDH brings sustainable Colombian companies in contact with international markets and organizes meetings with Dutch companies that are often leaders in sustainable trade, according to Ted van der Put from IDH. To this end, IDH invited representatives from renowned Dutch companies for a round table discussion, including Royal FloraHolland, Nature's Pride, Ahold Delhaize and Waterdrinker Aalsmeer. The theme was the EU horticultural need of Colombia, with an emphasis on flowers and fruit. This allowed the minister to gain a better understanding of traceability and sustainable procurement from an EU perspective.

Floriculture Sustainability Initiative
From the beginning IDH has been closely involved in the establishment of the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI), a market-driven initiative that brings together members of the international supply chain for floriculture and focuses on creating sustainability in the ornamental plant sector. As a member of FSI, Waterdrinker is happy to contribute to the goal of ensuring that 90 percent of the flowers and pot plants traded internationally by FSI members are produced sustainably by 2020.

Flower arrangements with Colombian carnations were presented by Waterdrinker's house stylist in honor of the visit. After lunch and various presentations, a brief tour of the Waterdrinker Green Trade Center led by MVO Specialist Koen Druijf followed. After this the delegation traveled back to The Hague.
