"NL: "Every percent profit can make the difference"

Recently the first roses have been harvested in the new greenhouse of Van den Berg Roses in Delfgauw, the Netherlands. The Avalanche + roses are grown under reflectors with 240 Micromoles. The reason is simple: "We are always in search of the last percent of return," says Arie van den Berg. "We light many hours and therefore, energy is our biggest cost item."

"Lionz Light has developed a reflector for us that generates over 2% more light. This, however, is at the expense of even light distribution, but this is less important to us than the output." Custom-made grow lights are also attached to the façades and concrete path. The lights are directed on the crop and not on the concrete path or façade, explains Arie. "This allows us to direct the light exactly to the location where the crop benefits from it."

"Because cultivation is so intensive, and lighting is one of the most important cost items for growers, increasing efficiency is very important. Every percent profit can make the difference", says Willem Vijverberg of Lionz Light. At the company a team of engineers is developing the reflectors. "Depending on the complexity, it can take up to 8 weeks to make the reflector ready to use. Before we submit a certain solution to the customer, the reflectors already have been subjected to several tests concerning temperature and light emission."
