Belgium: Floriculture turnover finally positive again

Last year, the turnover in the flower and plant sector rose for the first time since 2012. That good news was reported by the AVBS, the Belgian Nurserymen and Growers Federation.

Ornamental cultivation spending increased by 2% and this is thanks to an increase in consumer purchasing power and a sunny spring, which caused consumers to be more willing to buy.

The total floriculture spending in Belgium in 2017 amounted to 315 million euros or about 34 euros per Belgian (15 years and older). The increase in spending was only visible in Brussels (+ 6%) and in Flanders (+ 3%). In Wallonia, floriculture spending remained stable. 59% of floricultural sales was realized in Flanders and this share has increased slightly.

Even so, spending is still not back at the level it once was. In comparison, in 2004 the Belgians spent more than 50 euros per capita on flowers and plants.

A comprehensive analysis of the figures can be found here (in Dutch).
