Mother's Day rush hour at Dutch nurseries

Employees at hortensia nursery Dijk van Dijk in the Lier are working long hours to keep up with demand. This Sunday is Mother's Day in almost all of Europe and that means a lot of work and a lot of overtime. This week, a record number of 125,000 hortensias will leave the nursery for garden centers and florists domestically and abroad.

That's a 15 percent increase over 2017. According to grower Robin van Dijk there is a lot of demand for the so-called Magical hortensia. It blooms during five months and changes color three times. Flowering plants are extra popular right now due to the great weather. It is estimated that one in four mothers in Europe will receive a flower or plant.

Dijk van Dijk is one of the largest Magical hortensia nurseries in the Netherlands. Dutch growers produce almost 34 million hortensias annually.
