Growers from Bayindir district of Izmir started to export plants to the Netherlands. The support by Izmir Municipality by contracting production of flowers and plants to growers with purchase guarantee since 2007 started to bear its fruits. With this method, the quality and volume grown in the region has increased significantly. The contracts were handed through BAYCIKOOP, a cooperative of growers and this cooperative have also recently signed a contract with Dutch seed companies to sell cyclamen seeds to the Netherlands. Now in the next step of the process, the cooperative started exporting ornamental plants to the Netherlands.

Cooperative Chairman Ersoy Sumerkan: “We have made contact with Dutch companies in a fair in Germany. They have visited us in the Netherlands and liked the quality of our products so we reached an agreement. Now we are sending our first truck filled with local plants to the Netherlands. Our agreement with the firm covers at the moment about 2,500 pieces and 100 ornamental bush plants. The Dutch company already offered us a deal for us to grow ornamental bush plants for them for next year.”
