Garden Trials novelties - part 2

The first edition of the Garden Trials and Trade 2018 has gotten underway. From June 12-14, 34 companies, including a number of foreign participants, present their novelties and innovations in the field of woody plants and perennials in the Plantarium building at the International Trade Centre in Boskoop-Hazerswoude, the Netherlands. There will be a lot of novelties on display and below you can find the second part of the novelties that have been notified for the novelty inspection at Garden Trials and Trade.



Acer palmatum 'Arjos1' (METAMORPHOSA)
The colour of the beautifully incised leaves of Acer palmatum 'Arjos1' (METAMORPHOSA) changes continuously throughout the season and is a true colour metamorphosis! In spring, the plant's new shoots have yellow leaves with pinkish-red edges. In summer, the leaves turn green and have white edges, while the foliage on the new shoots is yellow with whitish-pink edges. In late summer, the leaves turn red to reddish-purple. METAMORPHOSA grows relatively quickly but remains compact, was bred by Solid Plants and is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Valkplant BV from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.



Agastache 'Agapd' (BEELICIOUS PURPLE)
Agastache 'Agapd' (BEELICIOUS PURPLE) grows in a beautifully compact way to a size of 30 cm wide and 40-50 cm tall. Not only are the large, purple flowers a feast for the eyes, they also attract many butterflies and bees. BEELICIOUS PURPLE has a second flowering, allowing you to enjoy this abundantly blooming Agastache for a long period of time. Van Hemert & Co. BV from Hazerswoude bred this plant, which is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Gebr. Th.&W. Alkemade BV from Lisse will place the plant on the market from 2019 and submitted it for the showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein takes care of the management.



Aronia melanocarpa 'UCONNAM165' (REVONTULI Mound)
Proven Winners Aronia melanocarpa 'UCONNAM165' (REVONTULI Mound) is the first dwarf variety of Aronia. The plant is uniquely low-growing, which makes it ideal as ground cover. REVONTULI Mound is a beautiful addition to the garden throughout the season. In spring, the plant is covered in elegant white flowers, in summer it has purple/black berries and in autumn the foliage turns a stunning red. It is very hardy. The plant is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Valkplant BV from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.



Diervilla splendens 'G2X88544' (KODIAK Orange)
Proven Winners Diervilla splendens 'G2X88544' (KODIAK Orange) is a shrub that is easy to maintain. KODIAK Orange is an eye catcher in autumn with its beautiful, shiny orange foliage. The plant produces orange-coloured new shoots in spring. The light yellow flowers from early summer to autumn make this plant even more attractive. It even flourishes in shady and dry spots. An application for protection under plant breeder’s rights has been made. Valkplant BV from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.

Rembrandt Hydrangea Collection
Kwekerij Lendert de Vos BV from Reeuwijk is submitting four Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars from the Rembrandt Hydrangea Collection. Hydrangea macrophylla Rembrandt produces compact growth, flowers abundantly with hard flowers and sturdy stems and changes colour during the flowering season. The plants were bred by Nick van Rosmalen from Velp and an application for protection under plant breeder’s rights has been made.



Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hore0007’ (REMBRANDT ROSSO GLORY) has red flowers. The flowers are green upon opening and slowly turn red. The petals have a hint of green showing through the red, which gradually fades during the flowering season. The flowers are completely red towards the end of the flowering season.



Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hore0031’ (REMBRANDT ELEGANT ROSA) has pink flowers. The flowers are lime-coloured upon opening, after which they turn pale pink. As the season progresses, the separate petals on the flowers get a hint of green. At the end of the season, the flowers gradually turn traditional pink.



Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hore0034’ (REMBRANDT DOLCE CHIC) produces bright pink flowers. The flowers open up with a yellow heart. During the flowering season, the heart fades and the flower turns completely pink. The flowers turn a deep pink colour towards the end of the flowering season.



Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hore0046’ (REMBRANDT VIBRANT VERDE) produces green flowers. During the flowering season, the heart gradually turns pink. Towards the end of the season, the edges of the small flowers curl up and turn red. At the end of the season, all of the flowers are a spectacular red colour.



Hydrangea macrophylla 'TK02' (SO LONG SUNNY)
Hydrangea macrophylla 'TK02' (SO LONG SUNNY) completes the series of repeat flowering hydrangeas for cold climates, which were introduced by Sapho in 2017. SO LONG SUNNY blooms abundantly throughout the summer with beautiful, rounded umbels. The white petals are curled with vivid pink edging. The flowers turn pinkish-white when in bloom. This variety develops shades of sky blue when planted in acidic, aluminous soil. Due to its compact growth and sturdy stems, this plant is a good garden hydrangea that is suitable as a stand-alone, in groups, as a low hedge or in a large container. Yasuhiro Takahashi from Narita City, Chiba (Japan) bred this plant. It was submitted and is marketed by SAPHO from La Ménitré (France).



Hydrangea paniculata ‘Breg14’ (POLESTAR)
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Breg14’ (POLESTAR) is an extremely compact and early blooming H. paniculata. The first buds appear from the end of May and bloom at the beginning of June with umbrella-like flowers. The flowers start white and turn pink during summer. The plant is extremely compact and reaches a maximum height of 40 cm in a growing season. POLESTAR was bred by A.J. Bregman from Benthuizen and is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Breederplants VOF from Gouda submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and also placed it on the market.



Hydrangea paniculata 'Couhaprim' (PRIM'RED)
Hydrangea paniculata 'Couhaprim' (PRIM'RED) is selected because of its early maturity and changing flower colour. At the end of May or beginning of June, the flowers are cream-white. The colour turns into pink and then red within two to three weeks. The flowers retain this red colour for a long period of time, up till July/August. The large panicles are elegant, with sterile flowers ranging from pink to bright red, as well as fertile flowers, which are red. PRIM'RED grows as a small shrub up to height of 1.5 m, with slender, straight stems. PRIM'RED was bred by Jacques Couturieux. Protection under plant breeder’s rights has been applied for. It was submitted and is marketed by SAPHO from La Ménitré (France).



Hydrangea 'USHYD0405' (RUNAWAY BRIDE SNOW WHITE)
Hydrangea 'USHYD0405' (RUNAWAY BRIDE SNOW WHITE) is a new, interspecific Hydrangea hybrid that flowers in spring and early summer, not only at the shoot tips, but also on all the previous season's side buds. After the first flush of bloom, new terminal flower heads appear on the newly-grown shoots. This extends the flowering period up to autumn. The unique shape of the flowers and elegant growth habit also make the plant suitable for hanging baskets and growing on trellises. The plant is protected under plant breeder’s rights and was bred by Ushio Sakazaki from Japan. Cultivaris GmbH from Heidesheim/Rheinhessen (Germany) submitted the plant for the showcase.



Rehmannia 'Crouching Tiger'
Rehmannia 'Crouching Tiger' is a new variety of Rehmannia, the “Chinese foxglove”. The flower stems grow from the shiny, rosette-shaped leaves. The large, trumpet-shaped flowers look like foxglove but the flowers are more curled, are white and have lively yellow/bordeaux-coloured throats. The plant blooms from April until October. Adds colour to borders or pots throughout the summer. Lüder Nobbmann from Wetzlar (Germany) is the breeder. 'Crouching Tiger' is protected under plant breeder’s rights and was submitted by Cultivaris GmbH from Heidesheim/Rheinhessen (Germany).



Spiraea 'Davcopo1' (MERLO STAR)
Spiraea 'Davcopo1' (MERLO STAR) has characteristic, intense red young shoots in spring and is resistant to mildew. The dark pink flowers appear in June. MERLO STAR is an attractive variety because of its orange-red new shoots in spring. It produces compact growth that spreads out from the bottom. The foliage is shiny and gold coloured and turns to green-yellow during summer.

This plant is protected under plant breeder’s rights and was bred by Jean-Paul Davasse from France. It was submitted and is marketed by SAPHO from La Ménitré (France).



Spiraea media 'SMSMBK' (DOUBLE PLAY Blue Kazoo)
Proven Winners Spiraea media 'SMSMBK' (DOUBLE PLAY Blue Kazoo) is a real explosion of colour! The foliage has a beautiful cool blue colour that turns dark red in autumn. In spring, apart from the large white flowers, the new shoots add a hint of dark red and lime. The plant is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Valkplant BV from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.



Spiraea 'Minspil04' (LITTLE FLAME)
Spiraea 'Minspil04' (LITTLE FLAME) is an excellent improvement on 'Goldflame'. It is particularly popular due to its compact growth and shiny foliage. The tips of the new shoots are bronze-orange coloured in spring, the leaves are golden-green in summer and turn orange with copper hues in autumn. The carmine-pink umbels appear in summer. This plant is protected under plant breeder’s rights and the breeder is Pepinieres Minier from Beaufort-en-Anjou (France). It was submitted and is marketed by SAPHO from La Ménitré (France).



Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Trared' (WINTER RUBY)
Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Trared' (WINTER RUBY) looks beautiful in winter with its coral red stems and leaves. WINTER RUBY has a number of other advantages as compared to typical jasmine. The foliage is brighter, it is more frost-resistant and does not dry out in winter. The ample white flowers are just as abundant and odourless. It produces compact growth with beautifully natural branching and abundant blooming. This makes WINTER RUBY an ideal variety to grow in pots with supports of 40 cm to 1.5 m. This plant is protected under plant breeder’s rights and was bred by Pépinières Travers from Saint Cyr En Val (France). It was submitted and is marketed by SAPHO from La Ménitré (France).



Veronica spicata 'Joca128' (SNOW CANDLES)
Veronica spicata 'Joca128' (SNOW CANDLES) produces masses of brilliant white flowers in summer. This new Veronica has very good characteristics: it is compact, bushy and not very sensitive to diseases and pests. It is approx. 20 cm high and 25 cm wide. SNOW CANDLES prefers a spot in the sun or partial shade on damp, well-drained soil and is hardy down to -30°C. It is ideal as a stand-alone, in a mixture of plants or in your perennial border. Jos Cammeraat from Boskoop is the breeder of this plant, which is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Gebr. Th.&W. Alkemade BV from Lisse markets the plant and submitted it for the showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein takes care of the management.



Viburnum 'NCVX1' (SHINY DANCER)
Proven Winners Viburnum 'NCVX1' (SHINY DANCER) is an exceptionally compact Viburnum with thick, shiny, dark green foliage that has attractive red edges. The leaves of this semi-evergreen plant turn dark red in autumn. It blooms abundantly with creamy white flowers in spring. An application for protection under plant breeder’s rights has been made For this Viburnum SHINY DANCER. The plant was submitted by Valkplant BV from Boskoop.



Weigela florida 'Sunset' (MY MONET SUNSET)
Proven Winners Weigela florida 'Sunset' (MY MONET SUNSET) is a dwarf Weigela with extremely attractive variegated foliage, which has the orange, red and yellow colours of a sunset in autumn. The beautiful foliage of this Weigela bring colour to the garden throughout the season. It blooms abundantly with pale pink flowers in spring. Valkplant BV from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.
