UK: Walberton varieties make waves at National Plant Show

The Farplants stand at the HTA National Plant Show is always looking to show something new and exciting to prospective customers. In total, Farplants entered 11 new plants into the awards categories, and of those, 3 were from Walberton Nursery: Spiraea Walberton’s Plumtastic, Gaura Walberton’s Gold Fountain, and Digitalis Firebird.

Spiraea Walberton’s Plumtastic
Spiraea Walberton’s Plumtastic is a new introduction to the UK from nursery owner and plant breeder David Tristram. Having introduced Spiraea Walberton’s Magic Carpet in 1995, the new rich plum-purple foliage of Plumtastic will be very complimentary alongside Magic Carpet for Spring 2019 sales. Plumtastic won a silver award in the HTA New Plant – Shrub category.

Gaura Walberton’s Gold Fountain
Gaura Walberton’s Gold Fountain is a new introduction from Walberton Nursery’s Trial’s department. Spotted as a variegated sport among the 2014 Snow Fountain crop, it has been trialled extensively to ensure the stability of its striking golden variegated foliage. Having already introduced Walberton’s Snow Fountain and Walberton’s Pink Fountain, the new Gold Fountain will complement the range for 2019 sales. Gold Fountain also won a silver New Plant award at the HTA show.

Digitalis Firebird
Digitalis Firebird has spent several years being trialled by Walberton Nursery’s Trial’s department. It produces exotic looking 90cm spikes of striking pink and apricot flowers through summer, and is a cross between Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis canariensis (Isoplexis canariensis). Available for 2019 sales, it also won an award at the HTA National Plant Show – Best in Category Herbaceous Perennials visitor award.

Aside for the award winners, two further new introductions were on display from Walberton Nursery, Euphorbia Honey Pot, Hibiscus Starburst Chiffon.
