NL: Summer flowers: Volumes are rising, prices are good
The season for summer flowers is unexpectedly favorable this year. The beautiful weather made up for the late start of the spring. According to Henk van den Berg of Summerflowers.nl, good prices are the result of a good demand. "I understand from several growers that there is more production than last year."
The weather has a big influence on the course of the season. So anything still can happen. "But so far we have had no set-backs in production", says Henk. "The summer flowers alternate smoothly and therefore the market is fairly even."
"Summer flowers individually will never play a leading role", according to Henk. "That is not possible either. The acreage per product cannot compete with the large productions of roses and chrysanthemums." Nevertheless, these are good weeks for especially the herbal crops. "Astrantia - the Ruby Wedding - does very well for example in bouquets."
"By using summer flowers, a florist can sell a bunch of roses in dozens of ways. One way for the florists to distinguish themselves. In addition, the consumer also asks for bouquets with many different flowers."
"We provide florists with stories about the summer flowers, to encourage them to ask the trade for these flowers. On the other hand we inform the trade about the offer of the growers."
