Colson Europe establishes Castor Solutions EA Ltd

"Enormous growth potential for flower cart wheels"

Colson is the largest production company of wheels and castors in the world. This just seems another trivial fact, however thinking this through we are talking about a significant business built around products which are used in hundreds of applications in every country around the world. In our horticultural environment wheels and castors are used on trolleys and equipment through the whole supply chain from grower to consumer in many countries. Recently Colson Europe B.V. ensured its position in the East African market through the close corporation with Castor Solutions EA Ltd.

A nice concluding of events, explains Harrie Bonenkamp. “We have been doing business in East Africa for quite a while for various end users in different applications; from workshops to food processing plants. And recently for example one of the garments and fabrics manufacturing facilities started operating a new material handling system in which many castors from Colson Europe are being used. For local support in the East African region we already worked together with Esther Muthara, but with the increasing activities in this growing market it was time for a change. This reasoned down towards the start of Castor Solutions EA Ltd”.

During IFTEX, last month in Nairobi, the company officially presented themselves.

Flower cart wheel
On second thought there is definitely a lot to wheels and castors. E.g. in the flower industry there is this buzz around the flower cart wheels, the one that you find under the Dutch Flower Trolleys. "Every grower who is using trolleys somehow values the quality of that wheel."

The current product is from the 4th generation. For each new generation new developments like the use of precision ball bearing, improving the stability of the swivel head and also the unique natural rubber wheel material – optimized for load, wear and rolling performance – were implemented. "Looking at TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)", says Harrie, "our current versions are more economic compared to locally available products."

Concluding this new permanent seat in the East African market proves the long-term strategic approach of Colson Europe. "We believe in a growing role for Africa for the years to come, especially the East African region", Harrie says. "Our castors usually are felt a little expensive compared to competition. However that certainly is for a reason: they simply last longer! That isn’t just an easy sales argument", he assures, "especially with an eye to some sort of cultural difference in the way the ‘Western World’ treats and uses equipment and what we’ve seen here. When, for example, in Europe a trolley wheel would swivel badly we would send this for repair. However here there is a good chance the same trolley would easily be used for years to come. Operators simply accept any equipment, tool or trolley. However with rising costs of production and higher demands on efficiency the importance of reliable and smooth running trolleys and equipment will also grow."
