"Australia: "Imported flowers carry pests that risk agriculture industries"

Half of all fresh cut flowers imported into Australia arrive carrying live pests that could threaten the nation’s horticulture, viticulture and cotton industries, The Weekly Times reports.

The newspaper goes on to say that more than 85 per cent of fresh cut flowers imported from Kenya — where the majority of Australia’s imported roses come from — arrive with “actionable plant pests” that have been identified as risks to Australia’s biosecurity.

The results are from a Federal Government audit of all imported flowers and foliage between March 1 and May 31 following the introduction of stricter new importing conditions.
