Customised light spectrum for tulips developed

Together with one of the largest Dutch tulip growers, BLV has developed a tailor-made lighting solution to increase the quality of sprouted tulips.

Tulips are still one of the most popular cut flowers in Europe: In 2018, the tulip production in the Netherlands exceeded the two billion mark for the first time and at the beginning of 2018, almost 130 million tulips had already been sold at the Royal FloraHolland flower auction.



Apart from the open field production, tulips are brought to bloom under glass. Especially during the winter period unfavourable lighting conditions can be a problem for the decisive quality characteristics of tulips.

In several test series BLV could identify the wavelengths, which are particularly responsible for the main quality characteristics: the formation of the leaf and stem inclination, the weight and height of the bloom in relation to the leaf as well as the leaf unfolding.

BLV's solution, in which not only light spectrum, but also intensity and uniformity are aligned as precisely as possible, has a positive influence on all the quality aspects mentioned, resulting in less waste and a significantly improved quality.
 
Due to the high colour rendering index of CRI>85, colours appear almost as naturally as they would do under sunlight. This not only considerably simplifies the control and selection of the flowers, but also offers particularly good working conditions.

This customized light spectrum for tulips is available immediately and comes as a variant of the BLV LED multilayer luminaire series.
