Because naturally it’s impossible to completely accurately estimate future demand, he continues, even if a certain quantity of all varieties is always produced for stock. Which varieties are actually popular with customers only then becomes apparent over the course of the season, with trends that also provide pointers for the next year. “But in April propagation comes to an end and from then onwards we can only deliver from stocks”, says Becker.
As well as macrophyllas Kötterheinrich now also cultivates paniculata hybrids. According to Becker, the distinguishing feature of the varieties is that there is a bloom on each shoot even of young plants.
