Uganda: Employer sports competitions enhances working relationships
Imagine this: returning to your work for football training after an 8-hour workday. This may sound unusual, but in Uganda it’s the perfect way of encouraging mental relaxation and a feeling of health as well as fostering the ultimate sense of community between the company and its employees. In Uganda, family business Royal Van Zanten and sports are inseparable.
A flourishing community Sports are the major unifying factor in the ‘one big happy family’ feeling that predominates at the production locations. This cutting producer registers its employees to play in the Corporate League in Kampala so that its teams can compete for titles in swimming, basketball, volleyball, football and table tennis. Employees also compete with each other every month in the form of intercompany games between the Royal Van Zanten locations in Mukono and Wakiso to see who wins the Royal Van Zanten trophy. These monthly Sunday events are also a day out for friends, family and others in the community.
Sports as a unifying factor
Sports are forging the organisation, its employees and the local population into a real community. This makes sports training sessions and games invaluable for the internal sense of community, motivation, health and the connection with the local living environment of Royal Van Zanten’s cutting production locations. In Uganda, football, volleyball and tennis are forging a company community that also includes its local community.
