Dümmen Orange:

Colombia: New red carnation takes center stage at Open Doors

Dümmen Orange presented their new collection of carnation varieties to the Colombian growers, and their red Pelayo carnation took centre stage. "This new carnation attracted a lot of attention and there is a big interest in trying it," says Juan Camilo Hoyos of Dümmen Orange.

The Dümmen Orange Carnation Open Doors were held last week, from March 7 to 11. They welcomed around 100 visitors, covering more than 75% of the carnation growing area in Colombia. Besides, also some growers from Ecuador as well as some flower traders paid a visit to the event.

The highlight of the event was their new bright red Pelayo. "This extraordinary carnation has an excellent field performance, very good stem quality and outstanding ability to store in the cooler," says Hoyos. As expected, the carnation attracted a lot of attention during the Open Doors. "Our customers were quite impressed with the quality and color of it and there is a big interest in trying it. It will take several months to have commercial production of it, since it is a rather new product," he says. The Pelayo has been introduced initially for Colombia, but it is available for growers around the globe.

"Also other new varieties, like the light pink Alcazar, the hot pink Zeppelin with a stable color and the strong orange Cowboy, were presented at the event and received a lot of positive reactions. For the spray carnations, the Brocoli and the Tarifa, a variety with many flowers and a very good field performance attracted the attention of many growers," says Hoyos.

Below are some more pictures of the Open Doors to get an impression of the event.

The Open Doors were held from March 7 to 11, 2016 at Dümmen Orange's trial house, located at Agroindustrial Don Eusebio, near Bogotá, Colombia.
