Netherlands: Behind the scenes at Marjoland

White Naomi, Red Naomi, Sweet Dolomiti and Lovely Dolomiti. They’re all grown at the enormous Marjoland nursery in Waddinxveen. With a glass covered nursery of over 2 million square feet and an annual production of 60 million stems, it is truly a beautiful family business where father, mother, 2 sons, daughter and daughter-in-law work closely together on their continuous success.

Entrepreneurship & innovation
At the age of 6, son and commercial director Daniel van den Nouweland was already toddling around the nursery. “As you grow up, you playfully roll into the whole business very naturally. It starts with cutting a stem here and there and helping out on Saturday mornings. Before you know it, you’re there discovering your own passion. My work has only become better and more beautiful over the past few years. It’s at times of recession, when an entrepreneur can truly distinguish himself from others. You always rather win with 3-2 than with 6-0 at football. It’s the same concept when it comes to entrepreneurship, it’s a game for professionals! Every day is different and you never know how the day goes. You try out something new, you try teaching another person something new, you try learning something new yourself and so on and so on! Each day is a new opportunity for us to strive for innovation!”

Marjo Job
Marjoland’s innovations doesn’t stop when it comes to human resources. Where most growers hire in extra help during peak periods, Marjoland has started its own employment agency: Marjo Job. “In order to retain our human resources within the company, we have started our own employment agency next to our nursery with temporary staff for the horticultural and installation business. We also get extra staff in during peak times through this agency. It is a great setup as the people feel very connected to us.”

Passion with passion
All the employees at Marjoland work with great love for the product and share an enormous passion for the roses. “Roses need TLC 7 days a week. It’s a living product that needs specific care day and night. We strive to get the best out of a product every single day. With climate control in our nursery, we are even less dependent on the weather. Another tool for creating an even better product.”
