German flower and ornamental plant markets expect records in 2016

After the market for flowers and ornamental plants and also the green sector have had to contend with declining purchasing quantities or sinking prices time and time again in the past years, records now seem to be emerging. According to estimates made by the Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) on the basis of the first nine months of 2016, the market volume is heading for 8.7 billion Euro (at retail trade prices). That would be a growth rate of just over 2 % in comparison with the previous year. In this respect, some segments are growing considerably more strongly than the overall market.

The per-capita expenditure will probably reach nearly 107 Euro. The increase in the expenditure is being shown, above all, in the case of house plants which rose to 19 Euro. Bedding and balcony plants just reached the mark of 22 Euro. With just over 37 Euro, cut flowers as the largest market segment were able to remain just as stable as shrubs (6 Euro), woody plants (17 Euro) and flower bulbs (3 Euro).

In comparison with the previous year, growth is being shown for all the segments. However, there are some which are not growing as strongly as the overall market. The winners include herbs, woody plants and shrubs for the umpteenth time while, in the case of green house plants, it was possible, for the first time in years, to once again register increases of nearly 4 % compared with previous year (0.4 billion Euro).

The market segment of the herbs exhibited the strongest growth at just over 5 % compared with the previous year and thus reached a volume of 0.2 billion Euro (at retail trade prices). Woody plants reached a market volume of just over 1.4 billion Euro in 2016. This corresponds to a plus of nearly 4 % compared with the previous year. The shrub and flower bulb segments both achieved rates of increase of just over 3 %. This is leading to market volumes of 0.5 billion Euro for shrubs and nearly 0.3 billion Euro for flower bulbs. Cut flowers, flowering house plants and bedding and balcony plants developed at below-average rates. With a plus of nearly 2 % in each case, the market volumes of the cut flowers are reaching just over 3 billion Euro and of the flowering house plants around 1.1 billion Euro. With regard to the rates of increase for 2016, the bedding and balcony plants constitute the back marker. With a growth rate of less than 1 %, the market volume of 1.8 billion Euro is just being missed.
