GGG Grünewald expands with pelargonium line

Summerpearls
GGG-Grünewald introduced their new pelargonium line under the trademark 'Summerpearls', that includes 14 zonale, 13 peltatum and 5 interspecific varieties. According to Grünewald's Nico Boers these varieties are all very homogeneous in growth. Additionally, each group has their own strong points. "The strongest point of the zonale varieties is the medium compactness of the plant; the flowers flower just above the foliage, the peltatums are available in striking colors and the interspecifics all flower within one week."
Room in the market?
The pelargonium is a very popular and one of the most used plants in the garden. Is there still room for new varieties in the market? According to Boers there is. "The pelargonium is one of the most used varieties in the garden, but is not being bred by that many companies. If someone introduces a good line, I think it will have a good chance of success. With our new line, we think we can meet at least the need of the grower, which is offering a uniform growing and flowering plant. For the end consumer it is more difficult, a pelargonium is just a pelargonium, no matter what genetics", he says.
At the IPM Essen, their new pelargonium line received many positive reactions. "And not only from our clients, but also from our competitors", adds Boers. This gives them good hopes for their new line. "But, of course, as they became available to the growers just recently, we still have to wait and see if the market is open for these new varieties."
