ASHS career award for LSU AgCenter specialist

Allen Owings, a commercial ornamental horticulture specialist with the LSU AgCenter, received the Henry Covington Extension Award for Horticulture Professionals from the Southern Region of the American Society for Horticultural Science.

Owings was presented with the award at the society’s southern region meeting in Mobile, Alabama, on Feb. 5.

“I consider it a great honor to be recognized for this prestigious award,” Owings said.

Owings has been a member of AgCenter horticulture faculty for 25 years and has worked primarily in extension for the past 20 years. He serves as research coordinator for the AgCenter Hammond Research Station.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in plants science from Southeastern Louisiana University, his master’s degree in horticulture from LSU and his doctorate in horticulture from Mississippi State University.

Owings’ work focuses on providing extension programming support to the nursery, landscape and garden center industries in Louisiana. He coordinates educational programs, plant conferences and field days.

Owings also conducts ornamental plant evaluation research and trials and coordinates the Louisiana Super Plant program in cooperation with AgCenter horticulturist Dan Gill and Regina Bracy, LSU AgCenter Southeast Region director.

Owings serves on the boards of directors of the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association, Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Foundation for Scholarship and Research, Louisiana State Horticulture Society, Louisiana Society for Horticultural Research and American Rose Society.

The Henry Covington Extension Award is a career award intended to recognize outstanding and valuable contributions in horticulture. Career contributions are to be within the scope of extension service activities in the broad areas of commercial production, processing or marketing, home grounds and youth work. Owings has been a member of the American Society for Horticulture Science for 30 years.
