NL: Lisianthus grower packs 600,000 stems a week

When Florismart visited the Lisianthus grower, van der Lugt, they had the opportunity to speak to Marcel van der Lugt, a man with a passion for his trade. Van der Lugt is constantly looking for new Lisianthus varieties. Besides this, they think it is important to keep innovating their processes in finding the perfect way to grow the best quality Lisianthus.

Quality is important to van der Lugt. They chose to only supply florists, keeping away from supermarkets.

Spending a day in the colourful greenhouses of van der Lugt would bring an immediate smile to any face. After the flowers are harvested they are put on water in less than 5 minutes, packed and all. 25 employees enjoy working in a company where they pack around 600,000 stems each week.

The company is run by three brothers and one son. The brothers van der Lugt started this company in 1978 but the company has existed long before that. Their grandfather was already growing vegetables for more than 80 years. He stopped growing vegetables at one point and started cultivating Freesias.

The brothers have been growing Lisianthus from locations in Honselersdijk and ’s-Gravenzande from the year 2000. Both farms are modern and designed using the latest technology to deliver high quality flowers throughout the year. For example, Van der Lugt was one of the first farms in the Netherlands to use a planter. In addition to this the flowers are moved underground from the greenhouse to the warehouse sitting in water within 5 minutes. This water is prepared with flower food for optimal quality of the flowers.

Van der Lugt Lisianthus grows more than sixteen different varieties in eye-catching colours. 85% of varieties are double Lisianthus, and 15% are single Lisianthus. The double Lisianthus has a bigger and fuller flower with a higher petal count. They used to grow more single flower varieties but the demand for double varieties is higher.
