Xylella fastidiosa arrives in Spain

After causing the destruction of 1 million olive trees in Italy, the bacterium has reached Spain and spreads across the Balearic Islands.

The Balearic Islands, with 20,000 hectares of almond trees, 10,000 of olive trees and around 2,000 of vineyards, has already declared a hundred of positive cases in the islands of Mallorca and Ibiza.

The first case appeared in a cherry tree in late October, 2016. At the moment, 2,000 trees have been uprooted and the exit of plant material from the islands has been banned.

The regional government expects Brussels to authorize only the removal of affected trees and not of all close to the affected ones.
