Ben Hogewoning, My-Peony:

The French peony season in full swing

The peonies in France are ready to be harvested. "Last week, we received the first French peonies. Now, the numbers are increasing and only today, 100,000 peonies arrived at our processing station in the Netherlands," says Ben Hogewoning of My-Peony, a platform that distributes the peonies of a selection of growers.

Peony season
The peony season starts at the beginning of April. Then, the first peonies come from the greenhouse in the Netherlands. "It takes about two weeks and then we go to the peonies from France. We have 8 growers in France, of which the majority grows their flowers in the open fields. They can supply us with flowers for eight to ten weeks and then we will transit to other growers in other countries, where we will end the season. The peony season lasts about 12 to 14 weeks", says Hogewoning.

Increasing demand
The demand for peonies is increasing. Last year, My-Peony sold 14,5 million peonies and this year the company is planning to increase the volumes to 20 to 24 million. "Over the years, we see the demand for peonies increasing. When looking at this year's Mother's Day, for example. The numbers now, are already 30% higher compared to last year," he says.

My-Peony
My-Peony, established in 2015, is a platform where a selection of peony growers can offer their peonies. "We carefully check the growers and their peonies on quality. We are known for our high quality standard and we are eager to uphold this. Every year, we visit our peony growers and the French peonies are being carefully checked by a former peony grower when being processed in the Netherlands. He, a Dutchman, used to grow peonies in France for many years." After processing the peonies, they are distributed to Dutch wholesalers and exporters who will, in turn, send them all over the world.

Recently, My Peony visited Marcel Worries, one of their peony growers in France, and they placed the following video on their YouTube channel, where they show how the peonies are being harvested from the field.

Peony grower Marcel Worries
Last week, the team of My Peony visited the peony fields of peony grower Marcel Worries in France. He has been growing peonies on 24 ha for 14 years now. "Funnily, he took over the business of our man in the processing station in the Netherlands. And Marcel Worries is also a Dutchman," says Hogewoning. Annually, the 2 to 2.5 million peonies are being produced on his fields.
