Dutch growers visit Uganda with Floritec

Five Dutch chrysanthemum growers went on an educational trip to Uganda with Floritec last week. They visited the production locations of Floritec's Xclusive Cuttings, Dümmen Orange and Royal van Zanten and had some spare time to spot some wild animals.

The purpose of the trip was to exchange knowledge between the chrysanthemum growers, the management and the local employees of Floritec's production location Xclusive Cuttings. "During the visit, there was enough time to chat and interesting discussions followed", says Floritec.

According to Ruud Nederpel - together with Sjaak Buijs one of the two potted plant growers from the group - Xclusive are doing proper business. "The company hasn't been active in this country for a long time, but the production quality and management are running on a high level. For example, everything is being documented perfectly, they own climate computers, and the production process is set up professionally. The company is comparable with that of Dümmen Orange, with the difference that they've been active in this country much longer."

At Xclusive Cuttings, cuttings are produced for Floritec, but their clients also include companies like KP Holland and SV.Co. Besides two potted plant growers, three cut flower growers of Zentoo took part in the trip. After the company visits - one day for each visit - the participants extensively exchanged knowledge and evaluated with the owners of Xclusive, Peter Benders and Hans van Eijzeren.

Uganda

In neighboring Kenya, many Dutch entrepreneurs are active in the floriculture industry. However, this isn't the case for Uganda. Nederpel, who visited the country many times, notices a strong connection between the floriculture companies in Uganda. "Apart from being competitors, they seem to seek cooperation, to support each other. For example, they put their heads together in terms of import duties, collective bargaining, matters of a bureaucratic nature, and so on."

All in all, it was an educational trip, and there was even time during the weekend to spot various wild animals.
