Video: Osmocote longevity - Controlled release fertilizer

On every bag of Osmocote controlled release fertilizer you’ll find that the longevity of the fertilizer that’s in the bag is clearly stated with a color-coded icon.

These longevities for Osmocote controlled released fertilizers range from 2-3 Month to 14-16 month. And the purpose of these longevities is to help you, the grower, choose the Osmocote longevity which best correlates with the growth cycle of the crop you’re growing.

An important point to keep in mind when choosing an Osmocote formulation is that the longevity stated on the bag of a particular product is based off an average media temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Remember, when choosing the longevity, it’s the average media temperature that we must consider and not the average ambient air temperature, which is usually lower.

So, if the plants you are growing with Osmocote are grown in a region where the average media temperature is above 70 degrees, well then you can expect the longevity of the fertilizer used, to be shorter than the stated longevity on the bag.

On the flip side, if the plants grown with Osmocote are grown in a region where the average media temperature is below 70 degrees than you can expect the longevity of the Osmocote fertilizer used, to be longer than the stated longevity on the bag.

This is a very important fact to keep in mind when choosing the proper formulation based on your needs and goals. Because depending on the region and the time of the year, one longevity of Osmocote may be more appropriate than another.
