Royal FloraHolland:

Next step in selection Members’ Council

The members of the Royal FloraHolland cooperative were able to register as a candidate for the Members’ Council until August 31. A total of 66 members signed up and this group is a good reflection of regions and products.

During the General Members' Meeting (GMM) on May 31, members of Royal FloraHolland opted for a new governance structure: a Members' Council. The members also voted during the GMM for the appointment of the Nomination Committee (NC). The NC selects the candidates for the Members' Council and prepares the nomination for appointment by the members in the GMM of December 6, 2018.

Diversity
The NC is satisfied with the diversity among the applications and the number of applications. Johan Buis from the NC: "Together, the group that has applied as a candidate are a good reflection of the cooperative. We see candidates from almost all major product groups. The fact is that no members have applied from the North-East of the Netherlands and relatively fewer pot plants growers have applied. There is also a reasonably good diversity regarding male / female, young / old, large / small growers."

Connecting role
The Members' Council will play a central role in the transition from Royal FloraHolland to the cooperative of the future. A Members' Council, which will in the future consist of approximately 40 members, will actively discuss strategic themes with the Management Board and the Supervisory Board and will consult the members by organising consultation sessions. The Members' Council has a connecting role between these parties and bears the responsibility to represent the more than 4,000 members of the cooperative.

Strong commitment
From September 17 to October 5, the first round of interviews will take place with the candidates. Neil Hellings from the NC: "Quality is our priority in the selection of candidates. A good candidate is someone who can fulfil his or her role in the Members' Council with understanding of the cooperative. He or she recognizes that the cooperative must change and modernize in an increasingly competitive environment. Candidates must have a strong commitment and he or she must be capable to discuss issues with the management and the Supervisory Board from the interest of the cooperative as a whole and not from their own individual interests."

Johan adds: "The point is also that the group of candidates as a whole has sufficient competences. Potential and the possibility of further development are also taken into account."

In addition to quality, the NC continuously monitors the diversity of the group throughout the process, so that the Members' Council will be a good reflection of the total member base.

In November, the NC will announce the candidates for the Members' Council.

Appointing new candidates
Did you miss the application as a candidate for the Members' Council? New candidates will be appointed by the end of 2019. For this selection process you can register again in mid-2019.
