US (CA): Flower farm has deep roots in San Diego County

Now a leading cut-flower grower, shipper and wholesaler, Mellano and Co. had modest beginnings. Giovanni Mellano set up shop in 1925 as a wholesale distributor in Los Angeles. He soon expanded his business by purchasing six acres in the Los Angeles area and began growing his own flowers.

Today, Mellano and Co. has five third-generation family members responsible for the day-to-day operations that continue to flourish. The family farms more than 375 acres in San Luis Rey and 75 acres in Carlsbad. Year-round, they produce and sell more than 7 million bunches of fresh flowers and foliage from their fields.
