Alta Sierra Roses

One of Ecuador's highest rose farms to attract ecological tourism

Growing roses on an altitude of 3100 meters, its daily reality for Alta Sierra Roses, one of the highest rose farms in Ecuador. In the heart of the province of Carchi, in the north of the Ecuadorian Andes, they grow several varieties of roses. Next year they are expanding the farm with more space to grow roses, and they are also opening their doors to attract ecological tourism.

Optimal conditions
“In this area the climatic and agronomic conditions are optimal for the production of roses of great quality, with long stems and large bud sizes”, says Gonzalo Chandi of Alta Sierra Roses. They grow several varieties in their 3 ha farm and as the majority of their volumes are destined for the Russian market and a little for Eastern Europe, the assortment is adjusted to it. “We grow for example Mondial, Freedom, Cabaret, Pink Floyd, Nina, Explorer, Hermosa and Iguazu.”

Expansion
Next year they are expanding the 3 ha farm with another 2 ha, totaling 5 ha. “Our primary goal is to keep our product within the highest standards of quality for the most demanding markets, meeting the needs of our customers and thus provide a source of stable employment for our people and community.”

Tourism
Then they also are preparing the facility for tourists. “We have the farm near to a touristic area called El Angel Ecological Reserve, and we therefore are eager to show clients who are interested in nature how roses are being grown and processed. It gives them a better idea where flowers come from.”
