Terra Nova offers sneak peek of Nautilus begonias

Terra Nova Nurseries announced a sneak peek of the new Nautilus collection of begonias and its first five varieties. The introductions to the collection include Begonia Nautilus ‘Exotic’, Begonia Nautilus ‘Lilac’, Begonia Nautilus ‘Moonlit’, Begonia Nautilus ‘Ruby’, and Begonia Nautilus ‘Supreme’.

The Nautilus collection is unlike other begonia collections because the varieties contain very showy colors with swirling and spiraling leaf bases. They have dense, upright habits and thrive in full shade. All of the varieties except ‘Supreme’ contain hardiness zones of 8-11, with ‘Supreme’ being zoned 9-11. From plug to a 4”-pot, the finish time for these begonias is between 4-6 weeks. For a gallon-sized pot, the finish time is between 8-10 weeks.

Begonia Nautilus ‘Exotic’ has deep red-purple leaves with lilac-pink, magenta and silver swirls surrounded by dark edges. This compact, densely crowded and bushy grower forms a tight plant that is great for both indoors and outdoors.

‘Lilac’ is a begonia with round leaves of violet-rose, ruby-purple and silver, outlined with a glossy black rim. With a foliage height of 15” and a foliage spread of 20”, this compact plant is suitable for container or garden.

‘Moonlit’ boasts red color on the bottoms of its leaves, making the silver tops and amber edges appear to glow. The medium-sized, shrubby, mounding plant contains cut leaves with prominent veins, which nicely enhance the glowing effect.

Begonia Nautilus ‘Ruby’ has medium-large and ruby-rose leaves with black veins at the spiral leaf base. The appearance is that of a “black spider” which creates a dramatic focal point for the shrubby plant. It flourishes as an outdoor or interior container plant.

Begonia Nautilus ‘Supreme’ has velvety, medium-large leaves with a complex color pattern of deep-burgundy, maroon and ruby edges, an emerald-green background, and decorative white spots. The color bands radiate throughout the leaves, and distinctive white and red male flowers add even more flare to this easy-growing begonia.

Terra Nova Nurseries has created a “Plant Profile” page and “Grower Recipe” specific to this new variety so growers can learn about growing habit, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team. These documents can be viewed and downloaded for printing at: www.terranovanurseries.com.
