Belgium: 3000 visitors to 'Helleborus Floral Award'

During the Het Wilgenbroek February 'Open Month' the weekend for the florists was a big success. Thierry Van Paemel reports that over 3000 visitors attended during this period. They saw the competition involving 25 professional florists who had to make a flower arrangement with Helleborus.

Interspecific crossing
During February, Het Wilgenbroek saw a 30% increase in visitor numbers who remain very interested to see the new selections of Helleborus and winter blooming plants. The most popular was H.nigercors ‘Royal sofia’. This very beautiful plant has big flowers and grey leaves and is ideal for planting in pots on the terrace or balcony.

Thierry commented “We also saw that people are very interested to use Helleborus as a pot plant to use indoors for decoration during the winter days. The special colours such as ‘Super Yellow’ are popular. We are working to create selections in small pots that can be used for indoor decoration.”

Winter flowering plants
During the first weekend the nursery created an indoor garden with winter flowering plants (Helleborus, Cyclamen coum, sarcococca, evergreen plants). There was also a pool with thriving Helleborus flowers and also a Helleborus wall. This was a big success with visitors enjoying the garden and there was feeling of spring in the air.
