US (FL): Wildfire destroys greenhouse in Sorrento

Firefighters protected homes from a small wildfire they contained at just 18 acres, but the quick action wasn't enough to save a nearby plant nursery.

PS Nursery has been serving the Sorrento area for 35 years. Owner Max Sonntag was working in his greenhouse when flames began to overtake it.

"All of a sudden, the whole thing came just like an inferno. The flames came up, like, 20 feet," he said.

Some who live nearby were saddened to see the business charred.

"Panic. That's the first thing you think. And you know, the kids, my son, started crying," Stacey Hall said, recalling the moments she evacuated her home just a few hundred yards from the nursery.

"I had to get the kids and animals out and we had to leave," she said.

Firefighters were able to keep flames away from about a dozen homes threatened by the blaze, including the home where Sonntag lives.

The nursery owner lost even his walking cane when the greenhouse lit ablaze. He's thankful his family and neighbors weren't hurt, but unsure whether he will be able to rebuild his business.

"We care about our business and we care about our livelihood and I care about my family," Sonntag said.

Power crews were also called to repair transformers and lines ruined by the brush fire. Investigators will be looking into what caused it.
